Conversations: Jesus and … Jairus
In Mark 5:21–24, 35–43 we read an account of a person’s deep faith, desperation, and the compassionate nature of Jesus. Jairus, a synagogue leader, approaches Jesus in desperation, pleading for the healing of his dying daughter (20 words). Jesus responds with compassion and reassurance, ultimately raising the girl from death to life (23 words). A dialogue of few words.
Desperation: Recall moments in your life when you felt utterly helpless, like Jairus. Maybe, a time when you received devastating news. For example, a close family member, friend or acquaintance has just received a terminal diagnosis. End-of-life is imminent. A range of emotions wash over you and numerous thoughts flood your mind.
You realise that only divine intervention could bring a resolution. Jairus’ humility and earnest plea can move us to approach Jesus openly, laying bare our needs and vulnerabilities.
Lord, I come before you in my moments of need, just as Jairus did. Help me to lay down my pride and come to you with an open heart, trusting in your power and mercy.
Faith v Fear: Following receipt of this devastating news, consider the fears that gripped your heart. Jesus’ words to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe”, are a powerful reminder of faith versus fear. Recall other areas in your life where fear overshadowed your faith.
Jesus, in the face of my fears and anxieties, help me to have faith in you. Strengthen my belief in your power and presence, even when the circumstances seem hopeless.
Jesus’ Compassion: Consider the compassion of Jesus as he responds to Jairus’ plea. His willingness to be interrupted and his gentle touch that brought life are examples of his unconditional love for us.
Lord, thank you for your boundless compassion. Guide me to be compassionate like you, to see the needs of others and respond with love and kindness.
Witnessing Miracles: Think about the “miracles” you have witnessed in your life – times when situations seemed dead/hopeless, yet Jesus brought new life and hope. These miracles could be moments of healing, reconciliation, or personal transformation.
Concluding Prayer:
Dear Jesus, as I reflect on Jairus’ story, I am reminded of your incredible power and compassion. Help me to come to you with my needs, laying down my pride and fears. Strengthen my faith, especially in the face of daunting challenges. May I always trust in your ability to bring life to my dead/hopeless situations and embody your compassion in my interactions with others. Thank you for the miracles you perform in my life and in those dear to me, seen and unseen.
In your precious name, I pray. Amen.
