Good News

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people”. (Luke 2:10 NIV)

We all love to share good news. When my children were born, I was eager to let people know and they in turn spread the good news to other people. To spread good news, we must talk about it.

When Jesus our Saviour was born, an angel brought the good news of his birth to the shepherds, who were in the fields watching over their sheep at night. Next thing, a vast host of angels joined in praising God. After the angels left, the shepherds were eager to see “this thing that had happened”. They hurried to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus and then went and told everyone what they had heard and seen.

Are we as enthusiastic as the shepherds were about telling people about Jesus? Do we share the good news of Jesus with people wherever we are? With our neighbours, at work, shopping etc.? We must do more though than just talk about it. We must live it!

The wise men lived the good news by bowing before their Lord in adoration and worship. We too need to gather to worship and adore Christ. We continually need to be fed by the Word by attending church, reading the Bible, joining in Bible studies and being encouraged by one another in order to be witnesses for Christ.

My family celebrates Jesus’ birth at Christmas time by having a special cake decorated with the words “Happy Birthday Jesus”. On the cake is a burning candle that reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world.

May we always remember the real meaning of Christmas. It is not just about Christmas dinners and the giving and receiving of gifts. Sure, God wants us to enjoy ourselves with friends and relatives, but if our Christmas is just about this and we haven’t included Jesus in our celebrations, I am sure that God would be sad.

So how about we make time each day, not just at Christmas, to meditate and pray, asking God to help us share the love he has for us with people around us and to thank him most especially for sending his own Son as a tiny baby in a manger at that first Christmas long ago.

Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son Jesus into this world as a baby at that first Christmas. Help us to share this good news with others so that we all will be made aware of our sins and come to you in repentance in order that we may live with you forever in eternity. Amen.
