Our Meryl receives Australia Day honours

Meryl Packer, along with her husband Rex, both long-time members of Immanuel Woden Valley congregation in the ACT, were each awarded an OAM in the 2020 Australia Day Honours for service to the Lutheran Church of Australia.

Their service notably includes over 40 years’ commitment to the Warrambui Retreat and Conference Centre, from the time of its construction, in a large part by volunteers. In recent years each has been recognised as a ‘Warrambui Legend’ for their many contributions.

Meryl served as Board member from 2004–14, undertaking effective liaison between Lutheran Women of New South Wales and Warrambui over the years. She and Rex are regularly involved in organising or attending the annual Work Camps and other working bees of various types there, from curtain making to gardening and cement paving.

Meryl has been the LWNSW reporter for the Lutheran Women of Australia magazine since 1976 and continues in this role, besides holding leadership positions in the local women’s fellowship. She was LWA Treasurer and National Committee member in 2000–03 and 2012–15 and has been LWNSW First Vice-President and Treasurer.

The couple have also been actively involved in their community for many years.

We congratulate Meryl and thank God for her and Rex’s dedicated service.
