Thirsty for God

We know of the perils of being physically dehydrated; and not heeding the warning signs can have adverse health problems, even death. However, our alienation from God has an even more tragic consequence when we unknowingly are spiritually dehydrated. We only know of our need to drink of the Living Water, Jesus, when the Holy Spirit brings us to that realisation in his Word.

As we reflect on Psalm 42: As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. We are captured by the imagery of a deer thirsting for water to survive; symbolising the deep longing and desire for God, for our spiritual nourishment and sustenance. We are dehydrated so much, and by his Spirit may we also “pant” anew for God’s Word to satisfy our inner thirst to drink of his Living Water.

Not only does the deer need to quench their thirst, but they also run to water for safety and protection. When a deer runs into the water (deer can swim), it helps them by causing their enemies to not see them and lose their scent. This leaves the prowling enemy confused about where the deer went. Deer also instinctively run to water when they have been injured.

Water in Holy Baptism was splashed on our head, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as we were brought into God’s family. Daily we “pant” for the water in Baptism where God cleanses us, refreshes us, protects us and heals us; giving each of us the reassurance that as we daily drown in the waters of Baptism repenting of our sins, we then look to Jesus raised from death for us. The forgiveness of sins is ours and we have the certainty of eternal life, drinking from the streams of living water forever. (Revelation 21:6.)

May we sing or reflect on: ATE 206 As the deer pants Words and music: Martin Nystrom, Psalm 42.

As the deer pants for the water

so my soul longs after you.

You, alone are my heart’s desire

and I long to worship you.

You alone are my strength, my shield

to you alone may my spirit yield

You alone are my heart’s desire

And I long to worship You.

I want you more than gold or silver

only you can satisfy

You alone are the real joy-giver

And the apple of my eye.

You are my friend, and you are my

brother

even though you are a King.

I love you more than any other,

so much more than anything.
