Conversations: Jesus and … The Paralysed Man

Read: Mark 2:1–12. This account is also recorded in Matthew 9:1–8 and Luke 5:17–26.

Visualise the scene: A crowded house in Jesus’ hometown, Capernaum, including the Pharisees and teachers of the law from every town in Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem.

As we read the account of Jesus healing the paralysed man in Mark, we are drawn into the depth of faith, the power of Jesus’ words, and the reaction of those around him.

  • The friends of the paralysed man showed incredible determination by making an opening in the roof to lower their friend to Jesus. Their faith and persistence are remarkable.

Personal Reflection: How persistent am I in seeking Jesus, especially when faced with obstacles? Do I have friends who support me in my faith journey? Am I that kind of friend to others?

  • Jesus sees the friends’ faith and responds first by forgiving the man’s sins. Jesus recognises the deeper need for spiritual healing before addressing the physical condition.

Personal Reflection: When I approach Jesus, do I come with faith that he sees and understands my deepest needs? Do I recognise the importance of spiritual healing and seek it earnestly?

  • The teachers of the law question Jesus’ authority to forgive sins. Jesus responds by healing the man, proving his divine authority.

Personal Reflection: How do I respond to Jesus’ authority in my life? Do I acknowledge his power to forgive my sins and transform my life? Am I open to the miraculous ways he can work in my life through the power of the Holy Spirit?

  • Jesus commands the paralysed man to get up, take his mat, and go home. The man’s healing is immediate and complete, causing amazement among the witnesses.

Personal Reflection: Have I experienced or witnessed God’s miraculous work? How has it impacted my faith and understanding of his power? Do I live in a way that reflects my belief in his miraculous and transformative power?

May this “scene” remind us of the power of faith, the priority of spiritual healing, and the authority of Jesus. May it inspire us to approach him with confidence, to seek his forgiveness, and to trust in his power to transform lives.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to overcome any obstacles that hinder me from coming closer to you. Strengthen my faith and the faith of those around me, so we can support each other in our spiritual journeys. Thank you for seeing beyond my physical needs and addressing my deepest spiritual needs. May your power be evident in my life, drawing others to you through my testimony. In your powerful name, I pray. Amen.
